Prime Me Up Before You Go-Go

I was never a big fan of primers. It just seemed like an unnecessary extra step in my morning makeup routine—which these days is super minimal, if not non-existent. Still, over the years that I’ve had Ipsy, Birchbox, and Influenster subscriptions, I’ve obtained a small junkyard of the stuff. When I finally started to play around with them, I realized that a GOOD primer makes all the difference in the world. Sure, you can go without it like I did for many years, but a quality primer can really make a noticeable change in the staying power, texture, luminosity, and finish of your foundation. Below are four of my faves:

Hourglass’ Veil Mineral Primer – The texture of this primer is top-notch. It literally feels like I’m applying silk to my skin. Those with dryness will appreciate this formula because it’s weightless, but still ultra hydrating—at least on my skin. It claims to be a matte finish, but I would call it more of a radiant-matte finish if that makes sense. I love this product especially because I tend to use foundations that are VERY mattifying. Applying Veil Mineral underneath ensures that my skin doesn’t start cracking, flaking, and settling into fine lines (yep, I have those). As a bonus, it has SPF 15!

2219868Benefit’s The POREfessional – In the summer, my skin tends to be oilier. That’s when this matte-finish formula from Benefit really comes in handy. It goes on smooth and definitely extends the life of my foundation while ensuring that my face stays shine-free. I also love that a little goes a long way with this primer. While I don’t have large pores, I can still attest to the fact that this product shrinks the appearance of them with just a light layer underneath your foundation/concealer.

LM_FP_ELaura Mercier’s Foundation Primer – I don’t think I’ll ever have a makeup list that doesn’t include at least one Laura Mercier product. This primer applies similarly to a lightweight moisturizer, leaving behind a clean, barely-there finish. The thin, creamy, gel-like texture is perfect for a natural foundation finish that doesn’t look caked on. Like most Laura Mercier products, this foundation primer is versatile enough to use year-round, so it’s definitely one of my staples.

Milk Makeup’s Blur Stick – I was lucky enough to receive this little gemBlur-Stick-cap-800x1100-2 complimentary from Influenster for testing purposes. It is definitely not for dry skin, but if you’re on the oilier side, you’ll probably love the Blur Stick’s clear, matte finish. It minimizes the appearance of pores, leaving behind a nice, clean base for your foundation. Because of the solidified consistency, you also get a lot of bang for your buck since it’s nearly impossible to waste product. Additionally, it’s non-comedogenic, vegan, and silicone-, oil-, gluten-, and cruelty-free.

What’s YOUR go-to primer? By now, you all know that I’m always looking to find new favorites. 😉
